Lawrence Lemons

Lawrence Lemons, age 84, of Scheller, died at 11 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Lawrence was born March 31, 1925 in Scheller, the son of Wade B. and Lillie (Pernell) Lemons. He married Jewel (Van Hoorebeke) Wells on Sept. 4, 1971, in Pawnee; she survives in Scheller.Mr. Lemons served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Idaho during WWII. He worked at Borg Warner in Muncie, Ind., where he retired after 30 years and also worked as a carpenter and built many houses. Lawrence enjoyed playing the guitar and fishing. Lawrence was a member of the Waltonville Freewill Baptist Church.Lawrence is survived by his wife, Jewel Lemons of Scheller; one son, Lynn Lemons and wife Myra of Lenaxa, Kan.; two step-children, Russell Wells and wife Beverley of Taylorville and Lisa Wells of Plainfield; and seven grandchildren and also eight great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Lemons; and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville with the Rev. Raymond Capps officiating. Interment will follow at Dryden Cemetery in Scheller. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 141. Friends may call on Thursday from 12 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.For those who wish, memorials may be given to Dryden Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.
